White House Rule to Expand Background Checks on Gun Sales Will Save Lives By Keeping Guns Away from Domestic Abusers

“We applaud the Biden/Harris administration for taking a vitally important step that will save the lives of people facing violence and abuse. The rule announced this morning will go a long way toward closing a loophole that for too long has allowed people purchasing guns online or at gun shows to evade background checks meant to keep domestic abusers and others who are prohibited from purchasing firearms from getting them. We have long advocated to close that loophole and applaud Vice President Kamala Harris for leading the administration’s work to get it done. This new rule will make our families, homes, schools, streets and communities safer.

“Our world has been shattered and our hearts broken time after time by gun violence, which is now the leading cause of death for children in our country. On average 70 women each month are shot and killed by their abuser, and two-thirds of mass shooters have killed a family member or had a history of domestic violence. The vast majority of people in this country want stronger action to keep guns away from domestic abusers. The status quo is simply unacceptable, and this rule is part of the change we need.”
