Advancing Policy Solutions

FUTURES believes that violence is not inevitable. If we create connections, build coalitions, educate partners and mobilize we can advance policies that help all communities not just survive, but thrive.

We were a driving force behind the 1994 Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and continue to ensure that ending violence — including domestic violence, sexual assault, gun violence, human trafficking and violence against children in the U.S. and globally — is a priority for policymakers. We also advocate so families and communities are able to thrive, from issues of economic opportunity to youth mental health to investments in early childhood.

No matter the issue, we bring our expertise, thought leadership, community partnerships, and voices of survivors together to share knowledge, develop solutions and drive needed change.

Our Policy Priorities

FUTURES develops our policy and advocacy goals by listening to survivors and utilizing the best evidence and research on what works. Our policy agenda includes:

  • Preventing and responding to domestic and sexual violence and human trafficking in the United States and globally
  • Working to eliminate child sexual abuse and other forms of violence against children globally – and helping children exposed to violence and trauma heal
  • Improving economic opportunities and creating safer workplaces for women and youth
  • Ensuring access to and improving the healthcare response to violence and trauma
  • Reducing maternal deaths everywhere by increasing awareness and improving responses to domestic and sexual violence
  • Keeping guns away from domestic abusers
  • Addressing the youth mental health crisis and helping create safer online spaces for young people
