The Protect Moms from Domestic Violence Act,
Introduced Today, Is Smart, Badly Needed Legislation
“Bipartisan legislation introduced today in both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives holds real promise for helping stop both our nation’s epidemic of domestic violence and our devastating maternal mortality crisis. The Protect Moms from Domestic Violence Act is a smart, badly needed bill that would help support health care providers and community-based organizations to connect people experiencing violence to help, and invest in research to identify the best ways to prevent this violence and improve the health of those who face it.
“We are tremendously grateful to Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Representatives Gwen Moore (D-WI) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), for introducing and championing this legislation. Domestic violence is one of the primary drivers of maternal mortality, but too often health care providers overlook it or do not know the best way to help. Enactment of the Protect Moms from Domestic Violence Act would help change that by investing in more research into the intersection of maternal mortality and partner violence, and in innovative solutions that improve maternal and infant health. It would result in more help for pregnant and parenting mothers experiencing partner violence.
“Nearly every day we see heartbreaking stories of domestic violence resulting in the deaths of women and children. An FBI report released in February documents an alarming rise in domestic violence from 2020 to 2024. We are asking Congress to pass the Protect Moms from Domestic Violence Act. Leaders in both chambers should prioritize its passage because it holds tremendous promise to help keep more mothers, families, and communities safe and healthy.”
